Shadow Ridge High School classrooms begin their days with watching announcements like clockwork, but not everyone recognizes the team of students and how much work goes into creating them every day. Behind the camera is the video productions class, run by Bill Roe, who helps guide the students through that process.
“I am there to guide students through all aspects of video production,” Roe stated, “I teach everything that is involved in good filming and editing. I hope that students learn how to film and edit videos that are high quality and enjoyable to watch. I also hope that after taking my CTE class that they are better prepared for entering the workforce.”
The class is part of the CTE program, meaning these students aren’t just learning how to read scripts or run a camera, they are also building skills for life out of high school. The class teaches valuable technical skills like camera work, sound, and editing, but also teamwork and meeting deadlines, which is extremely useful anywhere people decide to go in life. Like any project, putting the announcements out comes with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest is making sure that all of the important stories around Shadow Ridge get covered.
Roe states, “We want to include everything that is going on at Shadow but because we can’t be everywhere; we rely on teachers and coaches to give us stories and it’s not always easy to get them to do it.”
Even though the team works hard, they can’t report on events that they don’t know about, and it takes a lot of effort to keep everyone in the loop. Still, all of that hard work pays off, and there are always amazing moments along the way. For Roe, one of those moments was taking his students to Reno to compete at Skills USA. Bringing home medals was proof of how much dedication and hard work goes into it.
Roe explains, “I was proud to take my SkillsUSA Video Production students to Reno to compete on the state level and win medals.”

The finished announcements may only take a few minutes to watch, but their impact on Shadow Ridge is much bigger. They bring the school together, share important updates, upcoming events, and opportunities students might not hear otherwise.
“There is a lot of useful information in the announcements from ticket sales for sports and dances, to visits from colleges, to clubs and activities information.” Roe explains, “There is something for everyone on the video announcements.”
