Coach Andrew Dubois is more than just a flag football coach at Shadow Ridge, he’s also a junior studies teacher and someone who brings in a unique perspective in the classroom and on the field
Balancing the demands of coaching and teaching isn’t easy, but he seems to do it gracefully, dedicating his time equally to his students, athletes, and even family. Dubois didn’t just stumble into both roles either, he’s known for being friendly and caring, and he’s inspired by people who helped him when he was younger.
“I think it was always a part of me, but really it came from reflection of the teachers, counselors and coaches I had in my life that made an impact on me,” he explains.
His experience as a summer camp counselor in college rooted him firmly in this calling, especially seeing how powerful it was to help kids feel seen and comfortable.
Finding balance is always a challenge with his busy schedule, but he finds ways to make it work.
Dubois says, “Some days it does feel hard, but ultimately it comes to prioritizing time.”

He tries to stay organized so he has time for school, students, and his family. Dubois tries his best not to bring work home, so he can prioritize his family and give them the time they deserve.
“I just need to sacrifice my time whether that means waking up early or staying at school a little later to make sure everything is set up and prepared,” Dubois expressed.
For Dubois, this means early mornings, late nights, and plenty of sacrifices.
One of the best things of being involved with students and athletes is making real connections with them and watching those relationships grow beyond graduation.
“I have then carried those bonds past graduation and I have since seen students get married, have babies, get jobs and move on with their career while still inviting me to be a part of their life. That is easily the most rewarding,” Dubois said.
Some experiences stick more than others, winning games is special, but some memories mean more than just winning.
Dubois stated, “One specific moment for me is right before the Semi finals of our 2nd State Championship a couple of the girls asked me to talk and walk with them before the game. We just walked to midfield and looked back and had a heartfelt moment to bond and just remind them how proud I was as a coach regardless but to leave what they got on the field and their play and character is what would be remembered. I still have kept in contact with both of those athletes and they’ve invited me to remain a part of their lives.”

Being a father and a husband also plays a big role in how he treats his students and athletes, Dubois has an amazing support system from his family.
Dubois expresses, “I’m just filled with love and support. I am lucky to have the family I have. My wife is extremely loving and supportive and my son loves being a part of it and looks up to these kids and athletes. In turn, I want to always lead and live in a way that represents my family well.”

When Dubois isn’t teaching or coaching, one of his favorite things is spending quality time with his son.
“He is my mini me. He loves sports, trying new foods and traveling, so anything that we can do involving any of those things is awesome,” Dubois shared.
If there’s one person who stands out as his biggest influence, it would be his mother, who was also a teacher.
Dubois explained, “She is someone that I have always looked up to. She has shown me how to love anyone and everyone and find joy in life.”
If people had just one word to describe Dubois, he hopes it would be “family.”
“I want them to be comfortable with me, that I could be someone they can rely on.” Dubois voiced.
Coach Dubois’s life is all about commitment, compassion, and connection. Whether that is on the field, in the classroom, or at home, he’s building bonds that last a lifetime.
