As the new school year at Shadow Ridge begins, students are met with a wide variety of clubs to attend, with options ranging from the Archery Club to the Esports Club. Among these different options is the Creative Writing Club.
The club, hosted by English teacher Mr. Flynn along with students Emily Morano, Autumn Harris, and McKenna Escebedo, holds meetings every Thursday after school. The club offers students a space to express themselves through writing while also improving their writing and thinking skills and providing students with an opportunity to explore their creativity beyond the normal classroom.
The Creative Writing Club is open to students of all skill levels, whether they are experienced writers working on personal projects or curious about trying a new form of expression. Members are encouraged to share their writing, participate in group activities, and take part in discussions that spark new ideas. Meetings also serve as a way for writers to receive helpful feedback from their peers while connecting with other students who share the same interests—something that isn’t often achieved in the average class.
“You get to share different ideas and creativity,” Mr. Flynn stated. “You don’t necessarily get a lot of that in a day at school.”

In addition to building skills, the club places a strong emphasis on community. Writing can often feel like a solitary thing, but the Creative Writing Club gives students the chance to be part of a community of writers. Members are encouraged to take risks, experiment with different styles of writing, and push the boundaries of their creativity. From poetry and short fiction to creative nonfiction and more, the possibilities are endless.
Leaders of the club hope that the club will inspire students to use writing not just for school, but also as a form of personal expression. Writing can serve as a way to share emotions, stories, and ideas. It is also a great way to connect with others.
With its welcoming atmosphere and focus on creativity, the Creative Writing Club has become an exciting new addition to Shadow Ridge. The Creative Writing Club creates the perfect opportunity for students who want to improve their writing, explore new styles of writing, or simply find a community of like-minded peers. The club offers the perfect opportunity for students to grow.
