On October 10th, Shadow Ridge High School will join millions around the world in observing World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and emphasizing the critical importance of access to support services. This year’s theme focuses on breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from receiving the care they need, shining a spotlight on the ongoing challenges faced by many.
To show their support, students at Shadow Ridge are encouraged to wear green on October 10th. This simple yet powerful gesture aims to foster a culture of openness and understanding around mental health issues within the school community. The counseling team hopes this collective action will remind everyone that mental health is just as important as physical health.

“World Mental Health Day is a great opportunity not only to raise awareness of various mental health illnesses, but also to educate people,” said Dr. Hannah Small, a counselor at Shadow Ridge. “Often, students do not realize that help is available, and it is therefore essential for schools to actively participate in World Mental Health Day to understand the supports in place for those who might be struggling. 50% of all chronic mental illnesses begin at the age of just 14!”
Access to mental health care remains a significant challenge for many young people. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly two-thirds of individuals with mental health disorders worldwide do not receive the care they require (WHO, 2021). Barriers such as stigma, limited resources, and affordability continue to prevent many from seeking help. This global reality impacts students as well, making it vital for schools to provide accessible support.

To assist students at Shadow Ridge, the counseling team highlights the availability of free therapy through Hazel Health. Hazel Health offers confidential virtual counseling sessions with licensed therapists, making it easier for students to access support in a way that fits their busy schedules and respects their privacy. This service enables students to connect with professionals without needing to leave school or home, reducing common obstacles such as transportation or scheduling conflicts.
Dr. Vikram Patel, a renowned expert in global mental health, stresses the importance of ensuring accessible care for all: “Access to mental health support should be a fundamental right, not a privilege. When young people know where and how to get help, it can transform their lives.”
Wearing green on World Mental Health Day is more than just a show of school spirit—it serves as a powerful reminder that mental health matters, and that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Students interested in learning more about Hazel Health or other mental health resources are encouraged to visit the counseling office or review the informational flyer distributed throughout the school.
By raising awareness and promoting access to support, Shadow Ridge High School aims to build a more caring, resilient, and healthy community for all its students.
