Shadow Ridge High School is excited to announce that its HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) team is now accepting new members for the 2025-2026 school year. This student-led organization offers aspiring healthcare professionals a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, engage in community service, and participate in competitive events.

Keri Chamber, the anatomy teacher and HOSA advisor commented, “I think the HOSA experience is truly one of a kind. You really appreciate its full impact at SLC (the state leadership conference), It is such a great way for students interested in careers in the medical field to gain hands-on experience and learn valuable skills they might not otherwise be exposed to until after high school. It can not only better prepare students for their future career, but it will also expose them to career fields they may have not previously considered. Preparing for competition is rigorous but it is also fun and you become part of a super special tight-knit community here on campus. But, the SLC is where students really get the chance to shine, to hone their skills, to experience ups and downs with their teammates and friends, to meet new people with like-minded career goals, and to grow as individuals.”
HOSA provides a platform for students to explore various health-related careers through hands-on experiences and competitions. Members can compete in various events such as Medical Terminology, Nursing Assisting, Human Growth & Development, among others. These competitions not only enhance the students’ knowledge but also prepare them for future careers in the healthcare industry.
Mrs. Stewart, the Medical Science teacher and HOSA advisor said, “Together, we ensure that students have access to all necessary resources, including textbooks, study materials, and Canvas courses tailored to their specific HOSA events. We provide all required supplies—such as gloves and PPE—and work in small groups to offer hands-on experiences and personalized feedback that prepares students for competition and real-world application. Beyond the classroom, our advisors help organize enriching events like volunteer opportunities at the Magical Forest and participation in the Mini Med School hosted by UNLV. We also support students in planning fundraising efforts to make it financially possible for all members to attend HOSA conferences and competitions. Our goal is to create a supportive, inspiring environment where students can thrive as future leaders in healthcare—and none of it would be possible without the amazing efforts of our advising team.”
Meetings are held every Thursday after school in either Mrs. Chambers’ or Mrs. Stewarts’ room. These regular meetings allow members a chance to collaborate, learn, and grow together. The HOSA team at Shadow Ridge is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students can thrive and pursue their passions in the healthcare field.

“The specific programs we cater to here at SRHS include:
– EMT
– Nursing Assisting
– Veterinary Science
– Pharmacy Science
– Physical Therapy
– Family Medicine Physician
There are far more events than those listed. This is just the list of events that teachers here at Shadow oversee based on their specialized professional backgrounds. Students can visit this website for a full list of events offered through HOSA,” Mrs. Chambers added.
Of course, preparation takes time. Students and advisors spent months ensuring that their knowledge is top-quality.
“Students begin by selecting the event they will compete in, such as Physical Therapy, EMT, and other healthcare-related fields. Each Thursday after school, advisors meet with students to review competition guidelines and assist them in studying the required content. Advisors also organize mock skill competitions and provide personalized feedback to help students improve. Hands-on activities are incorporated to test both knowledge and practical skills. In March, students attend the HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC), where they showcase their abilities. The competition begins with a written exam in Round 1. Those who pass advance to the final skills round, where they are evaluated by professionals in their respective fields. Top performers receive awards and may qualify for scholarships. Students who place in the top three of their events move on to the International Leadership Conference (ILC) to compete against peers from across the nation. Through this experience, students gain valuable skills that support their future goals, while also creating lasting memories and enjoying the journey along the way,” Mrs. Stewart said.
