AI is rapidly transforming the way students learn, and for some teachers, banning it outright isn’t the answer. Instead, they’re finding ways to incorporate AI as a tool that makes sure students remain active participants in their own learning. For many educators, AI is already a part of the professional world, so it makes sense to introduce it into the classroom
“I will sometimes allow students to use AI on certain assignments in my classes because it’s already part of the workplace,” Computer Science teacher Austin Lewis explained, “It doesn’t matter which industry, so many groups are already using AI. Instead of banning it, I think we need to focus on how to use it responsibly and effectively.”
AI has opened new doors for students and teachers alike, making learning more interactive and personalized. Lewis has found ways to include AI in his lessons and assignments to further his students’ understanding, instead of just giving them a shortcut.
Lewis continued, “I’ve seen AI help students work more efficiently and get quick feedback, It’s amazing how a new approach to problems from different angles can help with understanding. It’s also useful for differentiated learning since students can get explanations tailored to their needs.”

As AI continues to shape the way students learn, its potential seems limitless, but with this comes important questions about its long term impact on education and critical thinking. While AI offers new opportunities for efficiency, teachers are also mindful of the need to keep a balance between using it as a tool and using it as a shortcut.
“We’re just scratching the surface of what AI can do. In the ‘90s, no one fully grasped what the internet would become, and I think we’ll look back at these years and laugh at how basic today’s AI was. But as exciting as AI is, we also have to be careful. If we don’t keep writing, thinking, and creating, we risk becoming passive while AI does everything for us. The goal is to learn how to work alongside AI, not be replaced by it.”
AIs’ role in education will only continue to evolve. While it offers incredible opportunities for learning, its impact will depend on how it is used, so teachers have to use it wisely. Teachers are finding ways to integrate AI without sacrificing students’ critical thinking and creativity. Rather than replacing skills, AI should be a tool that supports creativity.
