On February 13, 2025, a celebration took place at Shadow Ridge High School in Room 821. The event was organized to bring students together before the Valentine’s Day holiday. In a special after-school gathering, members of the Latinx Student Union (LSU) and their friends came together to express appreciation for one another, their friendships, and the time they spent together. Through karaoke, snacks with friends, and plenty of selfies, club members enjoyed themselves and were reminded that everyone is always welcome and appreciated in LSU.

“Today was a testament to the different kinds of love and relationships that can exist in people’s lives. It reminds us that taking the time to be with our friends and loved ones is something that should be celebrated not just on Valentine’s Day but every day,” stated Stephani Sanchez, the senior LSU Historian.
Being a club rooted in celebration, it makes sense that such occasions hold extra significance. Although the club celebrates its members, its open-door values ensure that anyone can join at any time.
Juan Mejia-Garcia, the senior President of LSU, stated, “We aim to be a club for everyone, from any background. We will always hold meetings and different events with the hope of reaching different audiences, both within our campus and beyond. Everyone is important, and they deserve to be recognized.”
Garcia alluded to past events the club has held—from assembly performances to musical chairs in the quad—where any student on campus was invited to participate. Members and advisors have even emphasized their desire to reach those who need it most.
“It’s hard sometimes to put yourself out there and try new things. I hope that, even though it can be difficult, students will feel welcome to join us,” stated junior Vice President Marlyn Mondragon.

Having been a member of LSU for three years, she is dedicated to ensuring ample opportunities for student involvement. Through fundraising and performances, Mondragon has been a key contributor to expanding campus events for anyone willing to participate. While Valentine’s (or, as some have deemed it, “Galentine’s”) marked another highly attended event for the club, even more is planned for the remainder of the school year.
Sophomore Project Manager, Esmeralda Amador, stated that she is “so proud of what we’ve done and excited for what we still have planned.” She hopes to take what she has accomplished with LSU and “continue to build community for the years to come.”
