Officer Turner became a school police officer with a simple but meaningful goal, to help the community. He enjoys engaging with students, cracking jokes, and lifting their spirits throughout the day. By maintaining a visible presence around campus, he not only
helps deter potential safety threats but also creates a sense of trust and approachability among students. His daily routine includes patrolling the school grounds, monitoring for potential safety concerns, and ensuring that both students and staff feel secure. His responsibilities extend beyond the campus as well, as he keeps an eye on the surrounding area to prevent any external threats from affecting the school environment.
Colton Patrick Pacoma, sophomore, says, “I feel lucky to be a part of a school with such great school officers. When I was out in the quad eating lunch, some officers asked me how my day was and made small talk with me even though they didn’t have to.”
One of the most important aspects of Officer Turner’s role is building strong relationships with the students and staff. While he describes himself as someone who isn’t a huge talker, he makes a conscious effort to interact with students in a way that makes them feel comfortable. Whether it’s sharing a lighthearted joke in the quad or checking in with teachers, his presence is more than just about security, it’s about creating a supportive and welcoming atmosphere.
Although there are similarities between his role and that of a regular police officer patrolling the streets, Officer Turner emphasizes that his focus is on maintaining school safety while street officers handle community wide issues. His presence on campus helps address problems that students may not even realize are happening, such as potential gang activity or conflicts that could escalate into fights. By staying vigilant and proactive, he ensures that Shadow Ridge remains a safe and structured learning environment.
Many students appreciate having an officer on campus, knowing that it provides an extra layer of protection. Pacoma continues, “I feel very safe with there being school officers on campus because I know that if a threat came to school they’d do something about it.”
Through his commitment to both safety and student engagement, Officer Turner proves that school police officers play a vital role in creating a secure and positive learning environment at Shadow.
