Some Shadow Ridge students are hard at work preparing to compete in the SkillsUSA state competition this April in Reno. Students in Forensics Science, Video Productions, and Automotive recently did a fundraiser to raise money for this competition and are excited to represent their school and showcase their skills
Video Productions advisor, Bill Roe stated, “The students are all working very hard to bring back medals to make the school, their parents and friends proud along with bringing home a sense of community with other SkillsUSA competitors from schools all over Nevada and pride that they gave it all they had and represented the school in an honorable fashion.”
SkillsUSA is a national organization in the United States that prepares middle school, high school, and college students for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations. SkillsUSA helps empower students to excel in their careers and contribute to the workforce.
Roe continues, “Each teacher/advisor takes their knowledge of the subject matter and their knowledge of SkillsUSA competition and uses that to inform students and help them to run through various scenarios that will get them ready for the state competition. State-level SkillsUSA competitions are a launchpad for students to demonstrate their skills, make valuable connections, and set themselves up for success in education and their careers.

By competing, students learn critical skills like teamwork, communication, and technical expertise while gaining real-world experience and building professional networks. These experiences empower students to achieve their long-term goals, whether in higher education or their chosen careers.
Forensics science advisor, Robert Stahlke stated, “Skills USA is a CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) that prepares students for the workplace by teaching them workplace and professionalism skills. Skills USA allows students to network with like minded and motivated students. If they do well at the competitions there are scholarships that are awarded to winners.”
Stahlke highlights the many opportunities available to students who choose to participate in SkillsUSA, emphasizing how the program helps them develop essential workplace and professional skills. students can work on their technical abilities and build lasting networks with peers and industry leaders. Doing well at these events can lead to scholarships, that can provide financial support for further education and career development.
