In an impressive display of musical talent, senior Kyle Beckstrand of Shadow Ridge High School, has earned a coveted spot in Nevada’s prestigious All State Band. This elite ensemble, known for showcasing the state’s finest musicians, selects only the best high school students to perform at various concerts and events throughout the year.
Beckstrand’s journey to this achievement began years ago, as he devoted countless hours to honing his skills on the B flat clarinet. His dedication and passion for music have not only earned him recognition at the school level but have also propelled him onto a larger stage. Beckstrand participated in numerous competitions, where he consistently stood out among his peers.
“Since I’ve played the clarinet for 6 years, I started in the beginning band in sixth grade and kept with it all the way until now as a senior. I’ve since tried to participate in any event I could try to get into different honor bands and every band offered at Shadow.” Beckstrand adds, “I’ve worked on myself and my instrument extensively, sometimes putting in hours every day which has led me to be the first Shadow kid in 5 years to make the all state band.”
The selection process for the All State Band was rigorous, requiring students to perform challenging pieces and undergo a thorough audition. Beckstrand’s hard work paid off when he received the news of his acceptance, an accomplishment that has made both him and his school proud.
Beckstrand says, “The biggest challenge is definitely the motivation to keep going and get better, it’s really easy to be good but it takes so much more to be great. At some point it feels like you have no more room to grow or you don’t know what to do to continue to grow. At that point it’s super easy to lose motivation and be content with where you are but it’s never okay to be content and you just have to keep doing better.”
Beckstrand’s achievement has not gone unnoticed by his classmates and teachers, who have rallied around him in celebration. Many view his success as an inspiration, encouraging fellow students to pursue their passions and strive for excellence in their own pursuits.
“Just practice, there is always more work to be done. Practice your scales, your long tones and really just work to be your best,” stated Beckstrand.
With this remarkable achievement, Beckstrand has set a high standard not only for himself but for the entire Shadow Ridge High School music program, proving that hard work and dedication truly pay off.
