Shadow Ridge High School has welcomed a brand new addition to its athletic coaching team, Coach Megown, who has taken on the role as one of the track and field throwing coaches.
Though new to coaching this specific team, Coach Megown has been at Shadow Ridge for a while, serving as one of the vice principals. His dual roles at the school reflect his commitment to supporting students both academically and athletically.
Although he hasn’t been a coach at Shadow Ridge all that long, Coach Megown has already started making an impact. With a respectable amount of coaching experience under his belt, starting around 1988, his career has included coaching multiple sports such as track, football, boys volleyball, and basketball—a journey that began in Nebraska before leading him to Las Vegas. His diverse background has left him with a deep understanding of what it takes to nurture athletic and personal growth among students.
When it comes to throwing for track and field, Coach Megown doesn’t see significant hardships in the sport itself but emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement. To support this, he is not coaching the team alone but works alongside Coach Gio. Together, they plan to launch a weight program for throwers. This program will provide students with access to equipment designed to enhance their strength and overall performance, ensuring they reach new milestones in their athletic endeavors.
The team’s current intramural schedule is pretty normal, with sessions held Monday through Friday, excluding Wednesdays. Once the season starts, they will practice daily, this consistent training is great for helping athletes get used to what’ll it be like going up against other schools whether that be running, pole-vaulting, throwing, or really anything else track and field related.
One of Coach Megown’s favorite things of coaching is working with students and witnessing their growth. “Seeing them put everything they’ve learned together and pass their personal milestones is my favorite thing about coaching,” he shares. His
enthusiasm for the sport and dedication to his athletes create a supportive environment that encourages success.
Coach Megown says, “Working with the kids, seeing them put everything they’ve learned together and pass their personal milestones is my favorite thing about coaching.”
Support from parents, students, and the Shadow Ridge community all together has been another highlight of his experience so far. As the students continue their way through this new and exciting year, it will be an overly joyous and thrilling experience for both the track and field team members along with Coach Megown himself. Andie Hughes, thrower for the track and field team, states, “He was very patient when working with us. He would help us fix the little things and made sure we understood what we needed to fix in our form and then explain why that would help us.”
