Some talented Shadow Ridge students are working hard to raise funds to have the opportunity to attend the SkillsUSA state competition this April in Reno. They are selling the World’s Finest chocolate bars Shadow Ridge students know and love. The fundraiser will raise money for travel and competition expenses, helping these students achieve their goals.
Video Productions teacher, Bill Roe, stated, “SkillsUSA students benefit from Career and Technical education that goes beyond what they are learning in the classroom. They are learning skills that will set them on the path to a future career and SkillsUSA helps to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.”
Roe explains the numerous benefits of SkillsUSA, and highlights how much participants can learn and grow outside of the classroom. Through hands on experiences and real world applications, SkillsUSA teaches students useful life skills like teamwork and leadership that can help them in their future careers and endeavors.
Roe continues, “We had several students go to the state competition last year. The students competed in competitions related to Forensic Science, Automotive Technology, Photography and Video Production. We brought home 9 silver medals and a bronze. The state competition puts them face to face with industry professionals and it’s also an opportunity to meet students from all over the state that are in Reno for the competition, it is very beneficial.”
Roe highlights Shadows’ success at SkillsUSA last year, and explains how beneficial SkillsUSA has been for many students. SkillsUSA has taught many students about new and helpful skills in their programs. Forensic science teacher Robert Stahlke continued to highlight the success at SkillsUSA last year, explaining how much students learned at SkillsUSA and how the forensics science team got to visit the crime lab in Reno.
Stahlke stated, “Teams from Auto, Video, and Forensic Science placed in their competitions last year. Not only was that a benefit for the Forensic Science Students, they got to tour the crime lab up in Reno and talk to the personnel who work in the lab. The Video Production students advanced to the National Conference where they competed against other states.“
SkillsUSA is a student led organization that gets students workplace ready. This year, Shadow Ridge has three teams going to SkillsUSA; Automotive, Forensics Science, and Video Productions.
