At Shadow Ridge High School, hall monitors play a huge role in maintaining a positive, safe, and well organized environment for both students and staff. As a key part of the school grounds, Shadow Ridge hall monitors work closely with administrators and teachers to make sure day by day activities run smoothly.
The primary role of hall monitors is to enforce school policies, particularly those related to student movement and behavior during class periods. They patrol the halls, making sure that students have valid passes if they are out of class and encourage students to remain in their designated areas. Hall monitors monitor crowded areas like locker rooms, restrooms, and common areas like the cafeteria and the quad.
Shadow Ridge hall monitors help reduce tardiness, and address issues before they escalate, or hall monitors escort students away from situations if the situation has already escalated. One of the hall monitors’ most important functions is to ensure safety. They are often the first to respond to any disturbances, conflicts, or emergencies that occur at Shadow Ridge during school hours. Hall monitors are trained to de-escalate tense situations, promote positive behavior, and report incidents to people like Missy Shipp, Jimmie Gilmore or any Shadow Ridge administrator. Hall monitors deter bullying and build a space of respect and accountability.
The hall monitors at Shadow Ridge go beyond rule enforcement, they also have connections with students. Many of them act as mentors, helping students navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom, by being accessible and approachable. Most hall monitors have different roles, for example Johnny Wheeler, is also the SR Women’s Varsity Basketball Coach.
“I love being a Shadow Ridge hall monitor and basketball coach because I get to keep an eye on my athletes and show students the way of life,” states Wheeler
Giovanni Chanes is the Polyenissian Club adviser and the Shadow Ridge Football JV Defensive Line coach.
“I love being a hall monitor because I get to make sure that I keep an eye on my boys and make sure they are not messing around because if so they have problems with me at practice.
Daniel Hollard, hall monitor and one of the track and field coaches stated, “I get to know students and get an opportunity to speak with students about sports and get their input while I also give mine. I get to see students in an academic aspect and also in a sports aspect. I also build good relationships with students and mentor many,” states Daniel Holland.
There are many more hall monitors who just play a role by making someone’s day like Ms. Eisha Mcafee, Brandon Monk, and Tevonn Mitchell.
“I like being a hall monitor because I get to have an impact and help change the mindset of our youth on the Shadow Ridge campus,” states Mitchell
Shadow Ridge hall monitors set examples for hall monitors all over the state. They embody the value of safety, respect, and collaboration, helping create an environment where students can thrive. Their work behind the scenes reflect Shadow Ridge’s commitment to ensuring that every student feels supported and motivated to succeed.
