There are many clubs at Shadow Ridge High School, and among those clubs is the Black Student Union (BSU). The Black Student Union supports and advocates for black students, fostering a sense of community and promoting cultural awareness. They meet every first and third Thursday of the month in room 311 or sometimes in room 200 from 1:20 – 2:20 pm.
The BSU not only learns about black history but also about other cultures as well.
“We have an engagement called the plus one where we have to bring someone that didn’t look like them so instead of being colorblind they had to be color braved and they brought a different nationality or race to our meeting, we had fun, everyone communicated and got along well,” Mrs. Kim McCoy, Advisor of BSU, stated.
The BSU has many resources and support systems to help their members.
“We offer scholarship funds, education, higher institutions, also other community hours like trial by peers, and lastly trades if students would like to go to trade schools,” Mrs. McCoy stated.
The BSU does many acts of service not just for the black community but for other communities as well; they are currently planning many events to help out as much as they can.
“We are planning to do a southern Nevada grant where we can help out the communities and my one goal is to help out one of the prime six schools and making sure that they are reading by three which means reading by third grade so we are trying to get a grant out so we can get after school tutoring and resources for them,” stated Mrs. McCoy.
The BSU offers many opportunities for personal growth and community involvement. Members can participate in various events, workshops, and discussions that focus on leadership, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment. The club also provides a platform for students to voice their concerns and work together to create positive change within the school and the broader community.
One of the highlights of joining the BSU is the chance to connect with peers who share similar interests and passions. The club encourages students to take on leadership roles, helping them develop essential skills that will benefit them in their future endeavors. Whether it’s organizing events, leading discussions, or participating in community service projects, there are numerous ways for members to get involved and make a difference.
Additionally, the BSU collaborates with other organizations and clubs within the school to promote inclusivity and understanding. By working together, they aim to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for all students. This collaborative spirit extends beyond the school walls, as the BSU often partners with local community groups and initiatives to further their mission of empowerment and advocacy.
If a student at Shadow Ridge is interested in joining a club that values diversity, promotes cultural understanding, and offers numerous opportunities for involvement, the Black Student Union is the perfect choice. Join them and be a part of a community that supports and uplifts each other. For more information, feel free to attend one of their meetings or reach out to Mrs. Kim McCoy.
