Ms. Brittany, the Shadow Ridge cafeteria manager, starts early, often around five in the morning. Arriving at school while most are still getting ready for the day, she and the kitchen team begin preparing meals for hundreds of students. Ms. Brittany is all about delivering more than just food, she’s delivering care and attention.
“I love working with coworkers and the thought of how I get to feed children and nourish the youth. Me feeding students daily helps students focus and excel in school so they may have a bright future ahead of them,” states Ms. Brittany.
Whether she’s making sure the food is fresh, accommodating dietary restrictions, or offering a smile and a joke to brighten a student’s day, Ms. Brittany’s work goes beyond the tray. What sets Ms. Brittany apart is her genuine connection with students. Ms. Brittany makes an effort to know each student that works with her and most of the students that she sees daily.
“Ms. Brittany always knows when you need that extra smile or even just a friendly chat. She’s someone you look forward to seeing everyday,” says Kaliyah Griffin-France, a sophomore at Shadow Ridge.
Ms. Brittany and the lunch team prepare breakfasts and lunches for the students. Menus for the day are pre planned by dietitians to ensure proper health and nutrition. School nutrition has changed over the years to appeal to healthier options for students’ nutrition. Managing a cafeteria is not that easy.
“The most challenging part of managing the cafeteria is nothing, you have to confront everyday challenges and deal with whatever comes your way,” said Ms. Brittany.
To ensure food safety in such a fast paced environment, staff must remain calm and continue to provide quality customer service, and that’s what Ms. Brittany and staff have done so far and will continue to do so. Students with dietary and allergies needs are placed on a special meal plan per their needs.
The most popular items on Shadow Ridge lunch meals this year are cheesy bread sticks, pizza, and Don Lee tacos. The cheesy bread sticks have become a staple in the cafeteria, with many students eagerly anticipating them each week.
“Someone who wants to be in a position as a cafeteria manager must have good customer service and a great personality and attitude,” states Ms. Brittany.
Being a lunch lady at Shadow Ridge High is a rewarding experience that goes beyond just serving food. It’s about building relationships with students, providing them with nutritious meals, and being part of their daily routine. The role offers the chance to positively impact students’ lives by fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, making it a fulfilling job for those who enjoy working in a school community.
