Film has been the main source of entertainment for years, but how can students fully understand the meaning of what they watch and the steps leading up to production? Luckily, Ms. Webb goes in depth of all the processes throughout the year, and shows the full meaning behind the silver screen.
Film Studies has often been referred to as a “life changing” class, and senior Madi Miller’s experience is just like that.
“I didn’t think Film Studies would affect me very much when I signed up, but surprisingly it completely changed the way I watch movies!” Miller said, “I always notice technical things like the different angles and lighting. Now I can also always catch things that might foreshadow the ending, which is good and bad.”
Film Studies isn’t all about watching movies. Students dive behind the scenes and learn the secrets of production, including all the names on the credits.
“Something that really interested me in Film Studies was how much goes into making a movie. We learned about all the different people, jobs, and work that goes into a movie…” Miller commented. “There is so much work that goes into every single scene. It is absolutely mind blowing and it made me appreciate film so much more.”
Possibly the most popular topic of Film Studies is Mrs. Webb, the teacher. Across Shadow Ridge, she is often praised for her contagious smile and bubbly personality.
“This class helped me grow a lot actually, and not just because of the content. Mrs. Webb, the teacher, is the kindest soul on earth. She taught me so much about patience and kindness. She has such a love for what she does and she really made my day every time I saw her,” Miller said. “She was loads of fun and so kind, and she still taught me a lot which I can imagine is a hard balance to find as a teacher, but she did it flawlessly. I love her so much and she helped me grow as a person by teaching me how to just be kind and love where I am.”
But how did Film Studies come to be? Mrs. Webb used her twenty years of teaching experience to create the perfect class to learn about movies.
“I love movies, acting, and tech theatre. I taught Film, Theatre, and Tech Theatre at Centennial HS for 18 years and Saville for 2 years. I learned that middle school was not my jam, so when I had the option to come back to high school, I was more than happy to teach Film Studies,” Webb commented.
Film Studies is an easy-going, high spirited and overall beloved class across Shadow Ridge. Suggested by the majority of the students, it often finds its place on elective forms.
With a bright new school year ahead, Film Studies I and II have plenty of work to do, and more than enough movies to enjoy.
