Creativity is hard to find as people tend to get older. They tend to lose the imagination they had as kids when they grew up. And once it’s lost, it’s hard to bring it back. However, there’s a new club that might help bring back that spark of creativity that was once inside.
Whether writing is new to a student or even if a student has been doing it for quite some time, the Creative Writing Club welcomes everyone. Creative Writing Club was started by junior Noa Grover and will be advised by one of the Imaginative Writing class teachers, Andrew Flynn. It’ll help writers continue their work with some help and maybe bring some inspiration to new writers.
“The world needs more creativity, and as someone who has seen what writing creatively can do, it’s important to encourage it whenever possible. Teaching Imaginative Writing here at the Ridge has given me the perfect opportunity to help students see how fun (and therapeutic) writing can be. Over the years I’ve met many students who were unable to take the class, so having a club will be another way to offer everyone a chance to work and share their writing,” stated Flynn.
The idea of a Creative Writing club all started with a poster.
“I was inspired by one of the posters for clubs posted in the school’s cafeteria. One of the posters was for a Poetry Club from 2013, and I was curious as to why it ended,” Grover stated. “I loved the idea of bringing that back in a whole new way, especially considering the amount of students, like myself, who love literature and the creation of art that comes with that.”
The art of writing brings people together in exciting ways.
Grover states, “What I will love most about the Creative Writing Club is the idea that I will be meeting more students like me, and I’ll be able to hear what they have to share with the world. Not only that, but this club will also help us young writers to shine within ourselves and our community. To be able to express yourself in such a welcoming and positive environment is one of the best ways to shine, honestly.”
If it wasn’t for his students, Mr. Flynn might not have started this club.
“The idea came from my students. I’ve thought about it in the past, but it wasn’t until some former students from last year started asking about making a Creative Writing Club that I decided to go ahead with it. I think it’s a great idea since there is only one level of Imaginative Writing. So with this club students can continue working on their writing and continue their class in a way,” Mr. Flynn stated.
Although not much is known about how the structure of things will go compared to the class, Mr. Flynn does know that he wants this club to be a student-run club.
“I’d like this club to be something students can take ownership of. In Imaginative Writing, I come up with writing prompts and different exercises,” Mr.Flynn said. “And even though I have plenty of writing prompts and activities we can do, I want this to be something the students take charge of.”
Creative Writing Club will offer new and exciting opportunities for writers to grow and prosper, and it will help relight the spark of imagination. If a student is interested in joining the club, they need to talk to Mr. Flynn in room 216 for more information.
