On February 15, 2024, Shadow Ridge High School ignited with the energy of long-awaited triumph as the first women’s basketball playoff game at Shadow in five years unfolded . The anticipation was high as the Shadow Ridge Mustangs clashed with the Liberty Patriots in a riveting showdown.
This marked a significant milestone for Shadow Ridge, breaking through to the semifinals to confront their perennial rivals, the Centennial Bulldogs. The victory over Liberty, achieved in a nail-biting overtime, resonated even more profoundly as it unfolded on home turf.
“It was an honor to play in the quarterfinals on our home court. It felt like we had a slight advantage,” remarked Jasmyne Sanders, a senior player for Shadow Ridge.
Throughout the game, both teams showcased unwavering determination, with each basket met by a swift response from the opposing side. Every possession was fiercely contested, with players diving for loose balls and battling for crucial rebounds. Shadow Ridge’s winning streak, now extended to eight games, underscored their resilience and tenacity.
Coach Johnny Wheeler attributed the victory to his team’s relentless effort, asserting, “My team simply wanted it more. They fought harder and out-hustled the girls from Liberty.” Wheeler said. “This is the first time they’ve moved on (past the first round). So I’m so happy for these girls. It’s the first time they’ve had a home game in over five years in the playoffs and the first time they’re going to the Thomas & Mack. So this is huge.”
Several players emerged as heroes in this hard-fought battle. Zh’mya Martin, the senior point guard, exhibited exceptional skill and leadership, tallying an impressive 18 points. Jaslyn Jefferson, the sophomore center/power forward, contributed 15 points and 23 rebounds, while Jada Livingston, the senior shooting guard, delivered a game-changing 3-pointer in overtime.
“Zh’mya was unstoppable out there. Her toughness and agility made all the difference,” remarked Maile Sataraka, a supporter in the Shadow Ridge crowd, “ Not only that, Jaslyn fought through the defense to grab rebounds and scored.”
However, it was Livingston’s clutch shot that sealed the victory, propelling Shadow Ridge to a decisive lead in overtime. Her 3-pointer, which broke the deadlock and stretched the lead to 48-45, proved to be the defining moment of the game.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes “Jada Livingston banked home a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 12 seconds left, and the Mustangs held on for a 49-46 win over visiting Liberty in the Class 5A state quarterfinals.”
“I’m incredibly proud of my team. This win was a testament to our resilience and determination,” declared Martin, the team captain of the Shadow Ridge team. “With players like Jada stepping up when it mattered most, I believe we have what it takes to overcome Centennial in our next challenge. I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
