Sophomore, Dominic Butler gives an inside look into what goes on in Photography II, not only in the classroom but out of the classroom as well. This is Butler’s second year taking photography, he really enjoys the class and has discovered hidden talents within himself.
Stepping into his freshmen year, Butler always looked forward to taking photography and found out how fun it really was. Leading him to taking the next step, Photography II.
Butler stated, “It was really fun last year being able to go out and take pictures of the school, so I wanted to experience that again.”
Butler was surprised by how much really goes into photography, it’s far more than just taking pictures and cropping them to the photographer’s liking.
“The class is more than taking pictures, which surprised me. There’s things like editing and photo-shop that goes into having a good picture or image. Learning how to edit was a little difficult and confusing at first but once I finally got it, I learned how interesting photography really is, and how it’s something I discovered to be really good at,” Dominic stated.
Photography has really opened a new door for Butler and has allowed him to express his artistic side in different ways, taking photos is far more delicate than most people think, than what Butler thought.
“Finding the beauty in the small, more simple things is actually more compelling, and leaves me to observe more than just glancing at them. Really acknowledging the intricate details that meet more than the naked eye,” Butler stated.
Shadow Ridge’s photography class teaches students various techniques like composition, lighting, and editing.
Butler has always admired the action shots of some of his favorite sports players, but he never really knew the steps to not only taking the photo, but the right timing to to take the shot and the editing regarding the lighting, how vibrant and the location is and the precise time the pictures are taken in. All of those small steps which are equally important to taking the perfect picture.
Butler states, “I’m not sure where photography will take me, but I would love to have a job in taking pictures of sports one day.”
Photography is such a fascinating art form, capturing moments and telling stories through images. It gives students like Butler a chance to learn about different genres of photography, from portrait to landscape and everything in between.
