Running Into Track Season
January 16, 2023
Whether sprinting, throwing, jumping, or running long distances, Shadow Ridge Track and Field is back in session. Track and Field is a co-ed spring sport that requires an extreme amount of dedication. With intramurals starting just last week, the team has already gained nearly 120 athletes altogether. As the season progresses the winter weather becomes warmer until spring time finally arrives about halfway through.
Coach Smith explains, “Shadow Ridge Track and Field is a one of a kind sport that welcomes everyone of all abilities and backgrounds. If you have been running, jumping, or throwing for years or this is your first time we have a spot for you.”
To start training with the track team, students need to log into Register My Athlete, choose track as a sport, and make sure to submit their physical and proof of insurance. Athletes are also urged to join the Remind. The codes and more information can be found on the school website under athletics, spring sports, and then clicking on the “Info Slide” link. It is also available above in the photo gallery. Right now when intramurals are in session, students are able to come to a few practices to see if they would like to join the team. Lots of student-athletes make great friends through their sport, as well as building strong relationships with their coaches.
Junior Kayden Bailey says, “I do the mile, two mile, and maybe throwing this year. My favorite things about intramurals are getting better for the season and competing with my friends, we get better together. I also do cross country in the fall.”
Track and Field can be joined at any grade level. Coaches are very supportive and are there for guidance, this really allows the new athletes to learn things very quickly. The first official day of practice is on February 18th, 2023.
Smith continues, “Even though the majority of the events are individual, we have a strong emphasis on being a team. 2021 Girls were Regional Champions, 2022 Boys and Girls were Regional Champions and State Runner Ups. Many of those athletes became top 4 in state, including a handful becoming State Champions.”
Starting February most athletes will have ordered their uniforms and are preparing for meets as well as everyday practices that will continue until May. Progression comes quickly, especially if the student works hard to achieve their goals. A lot of track and field athletes stay all four years of high school because of a strong commitment to the team as well as all of the bonds they create each and every year.
