Fiction: The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez

October is National Hispanic Heritage Month.  Students can celebrate October with an amazing book that takes readers into the world of star-crossed teens, Mayor and Maribel, in The Book of Unknown Americans, by Cristina Henriquez. After fifteen-year-old Maribel suffers a violent attack and brain injury in her home town of Pátzcuaro, Mexico, her parents bring her to America in search of safety and the American Dream. When Mayor spots her in a Dollar Tree it is love at first sight, but like all star-crossed love, it is not meant to be. Set amid the climate of the 2008 election, this heartbreaking story touches on relevant social, political, and relationship themes that will haunt readers.
