On September 30, 2022 “Hocus Pocus 2” Released on Disney Plus, which is a continuation of the “Hocus Pocus” Series. Mustangs are having mixed feelings about how the sequel measures up to the original and if it recaptures the same energy.

Although the second movie of the “Hocus Pocus” series came out recently, numerous fans still steer towards the original for a plethora of reasons. One reason why the first one is favored more is because it shows more about the story and executes a much better development of its characters.

“I like how they tell the story throughout the movie” Explained Junior, Emmalee Butterfield. “I love how they show the development of the witches, especially how they die.  I also love how the story goes on as well.” 

The flow of the original movie seems to be a major determining factor when it comes to fanatics choosing their favorite of the two. Another reason why fans prefer the first Hocus Pocus movie is because of special memories they have made that they have tied to the movie. This culture of nostalgia that kids have carried with them upon first viewing it creates such strong expectations, any sequel would have failed.

“‘Hocus Pocus’ 1 is such an amazing movie that has brought me so many memories. It’s just super fun and I always remember watching it with my family. Even now I’d enjoy watching it and those are the best types of movies,” Explained Sophomore, Carissa Smith. 

Since “Hocus Pocus” came out in 1993, many families have been able to create memories with the movie. With its revolving around Salem and the history of the town, Teachers also have an appreciation for the movie since it can be used in an educational way.  

“My favorite ‘Hocus Pocus’ movie is obviously number one. It is a classic. It’s the one that people know the most, but also, it is the most accurate depiction of core events in Salem which is amazing. It’s one of those movies that is easy to quote so people enjoy it. I also really like the story line and that it leaves people feeling content with the storyline at the end.”  explained English teacher, Ms. Pezone. 

The first “Hocus Pocus” movie is a fan favorite, qualifying as a definitive Halloween Classic. Although the “Hocus Pocus” series is meant to be a lighthearted comedy film, it can also be served in an educational setting.
